What does proxy mean for computers and how should I set it to install yahoo messanger?

I"m trying to install messanger but it says my proxies are not correct.

I have windows XP on an HP laptop. As far as I know, I don't have a firewall. I have McAfee security.

But my main questions are what are proxy settings, and how should I set them for my situation?

What does proxy mean for computers and how should I set it to install yahoo messanger?
Your ISP's server is a "proxy" (which means "stand-in", by the way), so is your router. So an incoming message travels like this (in a very short form): sender-%26gt;sender's proxies-%26gt;your ISP-%26gt;your router-%26gt;your laptop. The messages that you are receiving pertain to either your ISP's address (unlikely) or your network settings for your router and/or your laptop.

If your router is working with your laptop already without Messenger, don't change the router settings. Set your proxy settings on your laptop to "Automatically Detect" for both primary and DNS settings.
